About AgeByName
Northwoods Ventures LLC · Updated October 7, 2026
AgeByName answers one question for every first name: how old is the typical person who has it? It's run by Northwoods Ventures LLC, a small independent publisher.
What we do
Names follow fashion. Linda was everywhere in the late 1940s; Brittany in the late 1980s; Liam in the 2010s. That means a first name says a lot about someone's likely age, and the Social Security Administration publishes the records to prove it. We combine its baby-name counts with its life tables to estimate, for 3,713 names, how many people with each are alive and how old they are, and we give every one of those names its own page. The search box covers 100,000 more.
Around the numbers we build things that are fun to share: Guess the Age, Name Your Group, a baby-name checker, and lists of names that sound old, names coming back, and names that boomed and faded.
Where the numbers come from
Every figure is computed from two public SSA datasets, the national baby-name file (births 1880–2025) and the cohort life tables from the 2026 Trustees Report. The methodology page explains each step and what the estimates can't capture. We rerun everything each spring when SSA adds a new year of births.
What we promise
- The same method for every name, with no hand-edited numbers.
- Rounded figures labeled as estimates, because that's what they are.
- A kind tone: the fun is in the data, never in mocking anyone's name.
- No accounts, and nothing you type is tied to you. See the privacy policy.
How the site is paid for
AgeByName is free to use. We plan to pay for it with ads through Google AdSense; when they arrive, they'll never sit between a question and its answer, and advertisers will have no say in what we publish.
Who we are
AgeByName is published by Northwoods Ventures LLC, which builds independent reference sites that turn public data into plain answers. We aren't affiliated with the Social Security Administration or any government agency. Questions, corrections and press requests: support@agebyname.com.
